About the NSPCC
Here at the NSPCC, we’re leading the fight against child abuse across the UK and Channel Islands. We help children who’ve been abused to rebuild their lives, we protect children at risk, and we find the best ways of preventing child abuse from ever happening.
That’s why we’re here. And we won’t stop until child abuse stops. We’ve remained committed to this mission for over 130 years, helping to bring about huge changes for children in an ever-changing world. And all of our vital work is only possible because of the dedication of our staff, volunteers and supporters.
We protect children today
Our Childline service gives children and young people a voice when they have nowhere else to turn. On average, a child contacts Childline every 25 seconds, and our incredible volunteers are here for them 24/7, 365 days a year. And our helpline provides support to adults with a concern about a child, whatever their worry.
1 in 5 children in the UK have suffered abuse. We work directly with children and families at our service centres across the country to help children recover from abuse, and to support parents and families in caring for their children.
We’re constantly developing, creating ground-breaking programmes and campaigns to tackle some of the most pressing threats to children’s safety. The Lighthouse is the first service of its kind, providing a multi-agency response to children who have suffered sexual abuse, with trained specialists all working in the same building. And our work in online safety has made huge progress with changing laws, as well as educating children and families about the dangers the online world can bring.
We prevent child abuse from happening tomorrow
We know that the best way to stop child abuse is to prevent it before it ever happens.
We want all parents to Talk PANTS with their child, helping them keep their children safe from sexual abuse using simple but vital messages – all with the help of our friendly dinosaur, Pantosaurus. So far, over 1.5 million parents have had at least one conversation with their children using Talk PANTS.
Our pioneering Speak out. Stay safe. programme speaks to primary school children across the UK, teaching them how to recognise and speak out against abuse. We’ve reached 90 per cent of primary school children so far with these important messages.
And we work with parents, through campaigns such as Look, Say, Sing, Play, which supports them with having positive, supportive experiences with their babies. During a child’s earliest years, their brain makes 1 million neural connections every second. Our brain-building tips help parents bond with their children at this important stage.
We’re making sure more children never have to experience abuse
Together, we can stop child abuse and neglect – by working with people and communities across the UK and Channel Islands to prevent it, transforming the online world to make it safer for children, and making sure every child has a place to turn for support when they need it. We campaign for change. We work with schools to help children understand what abuse is and support them to speak out and feel safe. Childline and our helpline are here for children and adults when they need us. We develop services in local communities to stop abuse before it starts and help children recover, so it doesn’t shape their future.
And, above all, we work together – because we can’t stop child abuse alone. Everyone has a part to play in keeping children safe. By building a bigger team, we can give more children the safety and support they need. Together, we can fight for every childhood.
