Gamescom round-up - highlights from the UK stand at Europe's largest games trade fair

79 businesses, 120 meters of bunting and an 1000 ft² sized stand that took this humble writer 174 steps to walk the entire perimeter of; this year, the UK was back at gamescom with a bang. Check out the key updates from the show below:

Ukie scoops up the gamescom Goes Green award from Playing for the Planet Alliance

The coveted trophy was awarded to Ukie for creating the most sustainable exhibitor stand concept. Judged by the UN's Playing for the Planet Alliance, our CEO Dr Jo Twist OBE took to the gamescom stage to accept the award in the opening night ceremony on Tuesday evening. Watch her acceptance speech over on the Game Awards YouTube channel.

The green concept was based around putting in place a number of steps to reduce the carbon footprint usually produced by a gamescom stand. We vastly reduced the quantity of our stand's print materials, printing our stand guide on recycled paper and providing an optional QR code download. As part of the stand decorations we provided advice for practical steps games businesses can take on the journey to net zero. We included reusable cups for all exhibitors, as well as cutting down on unnecessary plastic for set decoration with all stand wall panels to be reused. What's more, the Ukie team took the train from the UK and will be offsetting the rest of its gamescom carbon footprint.

Shadows of Doubt by ColePowered Games wins UK Game of the Show award

Sponsored by Game Tomb by Dead Good PR, the UK Game of the Show Award scours the stands every year for the best as-of-yet-unreleased UK developed game at Gamescom. Last nights' winner Shadows of Doubt, to be published by Fireshine Games, was announced by head judge James Batchelor, Editor-in-Chief of Games Industry.biz - who commented that the detective stealth game was so good that he had to actively stop himself from playing it. Now for some of the fun stuff...

Visitors to the UK stand consumed:

  • 750 ice creams
  • 36 kilogrammes of coffee
  • 90 litres of milk
  • 1,060 litres of drinking water
  • 3,000 LESS paper and plastic cups due to reusable bottles and cups

The Ukie contingent somehow still looking fresh-faced and ready to go on the second day of Gamescom.

A historic moment for international relations; Ukie brings spare ice cream rations to the Australia stand.

Our Google Scholars were a massive help to the whole operation - as were our sponsors, Amquis, Bastion, Coutts, OPM jobs and Take Off.

It was widely speculated that our flag and teabag supply weren't quite big enough to identify the stand as belonging to the UK.

This year's trip to gamescom formed part of the Ukie Worldwide international trade campaign. Find out more about Ukie Worldwide.
